10 km Smart LED Upgrade on European Road

Project Overview

A Romanian municipality modernized a 10 km section of a European road that previously had either no lighting infrastructure or outdated high-pressure sodium (HPS) luminaires.

The objective was to improve road safety, reduce operational costs, and implement a future-ready smart lighting system aligned with EU sustainability targets.

URBIO delivered a complete lighting upgrade using Mesina XL luminaires equipped with MNPL smart nodes, transforming the corridor into a fully intelligent, energy-efficient lighting network.

Initial Situation

• 4 km of road with no lighting infrastructure
• 6 km equipped with outdated High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) luminaires (250W)
• High energy consumption
• Frequent maintenance interventions
• Poor light uniformity and low visibility

Solution Implemented

• Installation of Mesina XL LED luminaires
• Integrated MNPL smart nodes on every lighting point
• Centralized remote management via Lighting AI platform
• Adaptive dimming profiles based on traffic intensity
• Full compliance with European road lighting standards

Total installed luminaires: approx. 280 units (average spacing ~35m)

Measured Results

Energy Consumption Reduction

From 250W HPS to 110W LED average load

  • Energy savings: 58–65% annually
Operational Cost Reduction

Reduced energy costs & Remote fault detection

  • Estimated total operational cost reduction: 60–70%
Environmental Impact

CO₂ emissions reduced by approx. 120 tons/year

  • Reduced material waste due to 100,000h LED lifespan
